January 19 – MLK Racial Reconciliation Program. – 1:30 – 3:00, at the Jubilee Theatre, 1319 N. 15th (at Colcord). Dr. Jim SoRelle will give a 15-20 history of the Civil Rights movement, we’ll show a brief video, have a short speech by an African American community advocate, hear a couple of great songs by Ahmad Washington (FLOW), give some guidelines on how to be more involved in reconciliation, and let some of our attendees talk about the importance of King’s life, Obama’s presidency, and other important matters of race and reconciliation. January 19 – “Make MLK Day a day ON not a day OFF.” In celebration of Dr. King’s life, several organizations are organizing folks from the Waco Community for a day of service. Join in! Their goal is to mobilize 1000 volunteers. Here are just two of the opportunities

January 20 – Free Presidential Inauguration Viewing Event - 10:30 am, Mayborn Museum (1300 S. University Parks) KWBU joins the Waco Area league of Women Voters in presenting a special Presidential Inauguration viewing. Join the community to watch this historic event. This event is FREE. January 22 until Tax time – Free income tax preparation services. NeighborWorks® Waco, in partnership with AARP Tax-Aide and A.J. Moore Academy, announces that free income tax preparation services will be offered to the public beginning January 22. Eight sites will be open in Waco; Marlin and Mexia will also have a local site available. The most current information about site locations, as well as days and hours of operation, can be accessed by dialing 2-1-1 in the Waco area. Customers should bring a photo ID, all income statements for 2008, and social security cards for each person claimed on the return. January 28 – Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition Point in Time Count. Did you know that in 2007 Waco had 431 homeless, 70 of which were chronically homeless? Every other year Waco is required to survey the area to establish figures on the number of individuals in homelessness and to learn some things about them. January 29 – Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition Project Homeless Connect. 9 AM-12PM Acts Christian Fellowhip 1300 Mary Ave Waco, TX 76701. Project Homeless Connect is an opportunity for individuals in homelessness or in a state of poverty to come to a central location that will feature many local service providers. The Homeless Coalition will offer such services to homeless persons as medical attention, dental attention, job skills training opportunities and many more. January 30-February 1 – Critical Incident Psychosocial Intervention Team- Training Event – Did you wish during the recent hurricane evacuations that you could use your training to help address some of the emotional and spiritual challenges facing the evacuees in Waco? Waco-McLennan County Public Health District is forming a critical incident psychosocial intervention team. If you are a licensed counseling professional, a clergy person in the Waco area, or a student in professional training for Social Work, Psychology, Counselor Education or the clergy; you are eligible to attend this training and become a part of this volunteer team.
