May – Sign up for Mission Waco Poverty Simulations. Simulation dates are June 12-14, June 26-28, July 10-12, July 24-26. Cost $50. May – Applications and deposits due for Mission Waco Mexico City “Mission/Exposure” Trip. Trip dates are July 14-21. Cost $1200. Work in an orphanage for physically and mentally disabled children and with others in addiction, mental problems, and desperate poverty. Communities in Schools “Summer Employment Experience” program is looking for worksites. May 1 and 2 – Doulos International Big Garage Sale. In the parking lot 3505 Colcord Street.
Funds raised will go for the orphans and homeless children programs sponsored by Doulos.
Donations of saleable stuff (all kinds) are needed. Also if you’d like to volunteer for one or both days, we can use you. You will get a free Doulos Tee-Shirt out of the deal as well as help some orphan kids. Call 254 855 9512 if you have stuff to donate or would like to volunteer. May 2 – Sharefest Day of Service. Sharefest is an annual inter-church day of service in the community. Last year over 400 volunteers from 6 churches worked together throughout Waco and the surrounding communities to perform services such as landscaping and yard work for elderly citizens, cleaning up vacant lots, painting schools and other public buildings, and much more. Volunteers logged over 1500 man hours of work at 22 work sites. The day also included a food drive, a box-fan drive and a blood drive. May 2- Time For Change Symposium Marlin & East Waco. 10:00am – 2:00pm. Galloway Suites, Floyd Casey Stadium, Waco. The purpose of this event is to invite prominent citizens, influential businesses, community leaders and educators to gather together and develop, pledge, and execute a tangible plan of action for Falls County and East Waco. We will present the case study of Branson Missouri and their overwhelming success that resulted from a handful of citizens getting together and, one project at a time, rebuilding their community to one of the most sought after communities in the United States. This free symposium includes lunch and is hosted by Loreane Tomlinson (mother of Chargers running back Ladainian Tomlinson) and Empowerment Driven by Knowledge Coalition Symposium. May 3 – Greater Waco Interfaith Conference Second Annual Festival of Faiths. 3 – 5 p.m. Sacred Heart Catholic Church Activities Center, 2710 Speight Avenue. This unique religious event will again showcase many of the various religious faith traditions that are practiced by people living in the greater Waco community. Through music, readings, dramatic presentations, dance, and other visual presentations, members of congregations, temples, and synagogues will present important aspects of their particular faiths. May 5 & 6 – Family Abuse Center needs volunteers to help set up for annual luncheon. 10 am on May 5 and early on May 6 if we don’t get finished. We will be setting up tables, chairs and decorations for the luncheon on May 6. We also need volunteers to help with the Diamonds and Denim Fundraising event. May 7 – Legal Assistance Project: Free Senior Law Forum.  9 a.m. Area Agency on Aging New Road facility, 1514 South New Road, Waco. Refreshments provided. Participants will learn about advance care planning, wills and probate, Medicare, and guardianship. You will also receive forms such as the Medical Power of Attorney and Advance Health Directive which can be self-completed without the aid of an attorney. May 14 - McLennan County Hunger Coalition (MCHC) meeting – 11:45-1:00, Caritas of Waco Conference Room, 300 S. 15th. A coalition of representatives of food pantries, feeding programs, governmental agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, and interested individuals committed to solving the problems of food insecurity and hunger in the local area, the MCHC meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday of each month. May 16 – Dancin’on the Brazos 2009 benefiting Caritas of Waco. 7-9 pm on University Parks Dr. between the Hilton and the Suspension Bridge. Dancin’ on the Brazos will feature The popular 50′s, 60′s and 70′s band from Austin, Texas, Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88′s. May 26 – Crop Walk Steering committee meeting. 7:30 PM at the Seeds of Hope Publishers office at Seventh and James Baptist Church, 602 James. (The Seeds of Hope office is on the third floor of the Lueschner building.)  Join us to help plan the 2009 Waco CROP walk. Three-fourths of the proceeds from the CROP walk will go to Church World Service (CWS) a world-wide relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry. May 30 – An Evening of Music benefiting Red Door Pantry. 8:00 p.m. at Metropolitan Community Church, 1601 Clay Ave. Admission: $10. HIV affects us all; and the people living with HIV, the people caring for those with HIV, and the people responding to the effects of HIV in our community need and deserve support and assistance. The Red Door Project  is a ministry of Central Texas Metropolitan Community Church, and it is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by HIV disease by providing a food pantry service for persons with HIV, as well as peer support groups for them and for their friends, families, partners, and caregivers.  Proceeds from this evening of music by local performers will go to support this ministry. May 31 – A “Central Celebration” concert benefitting Mission Waco. 3:00 – 4:30 in the sanctuary of Central Presbyterian Church, 9191 Woodway Drive (Take the Hewitt/Estates exit off Hwy 84. The church is directly across 84 from HEB. ) The choirs of Central United Methodist and Central Presbyterian Churches will combine for a concert to benefit Mission Waco. The program will include a wide variety of church music from traditional/classic to contemporary. Choraland handbell pieces will be included as well as organ, piano and a brass ensemble. A love offering benefitting Mission Waco will be accepted during the program. There will be a reception in the Activities Center following the program.
