That’s exactly what a group of Chicano students did when they walked out of their East LA high schools in 1968, sending an unequivocal message to American educators and administrators that endures today. September 10 - McLennan County Hunger Coalition (MCHC) meeting - 11:45-1:00, Caritas of Waco Conference Room, 300 S. 15th. A coalition of representatives of food pantries, feeding programs, governmental agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, and interested individuals committed to solving the problems of food insecurity and hunger in the local area, the MCHC meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday of each month. September 10 – Mission Waco’s annual “Caring Cup Classic” Golf Scramble. Shot gun start, Get out the clubs and start putting your 4-person team together. The Greater Waco Chamber is partnering with colleges and universities to present Get to Know Waco College Day. Over 1,000 students from Baylor, MCC and TSTC will be in attendance. September 15 – Legal Assistance Project: Free Senior Law Forum. 9 – Noon. Area Agency on Aging New Road facility, 1514 South New Road, Waco. Refreshments provided. Participants will learn about advance care planning, wills and probate, Medicare, and guardianship. September 14 – November 12 – Volunteers needed for Best Practices Tutoring Pilot: Help Raise a child’s reading level by volunteering. We need 20 volunteers to commit to reading in the afternoons, at least 2 times per week, for 9 weeks. The times are from 3:30 – 4:30 or from 4:30 – 5:30. Tutors may work two days in a row (Mon and Tues). Or every other day (M-W, T-Th). The first training is Monday, September 14th, at 3:30 p.m. at Doris Miller Elem. This project is a result of community planning of over 700 concerned residents at the 2008 Greater Waco Community Education Summit. This program specifically addresses Assumption #2: that all Waco’s children must be reading on grade level by the 3rd grade. September 20 – Mission Waco’s Annual “Walk for the Homeless.” 8 AM – 10:20 AM, Meyer Center, 1226 Washington. Bring your group to this 1.4 mile educational/ prayer walk & show your support for those on our streets! We will again collect hygiene items (shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes/toothpaste, razors, and other items) and financial donations for the participating organizations which work among the homeless. September 24-27 – “No Need Among You-Including the Excluded” Conference. Location: Crestview Community Center, 7129 Delhi, Waco. Cost: $60 includes two continental Breakfasts and two box lunches. September 25 – RSVP Senior Source Health and Information Fair. 10 AM – 3 PM, Richland Mall, Waco. Approximately 75 booths of agencies and health care providers will offer free screenings and information to the public. Many older adults and their caregivers find preventative medical care impossible due to finances, transportation and physical limitations. The fair is designed to bring many resources and basic health screenings to one location for easy access and direct contact. September 25 – Program Submission Deadline for Baylor Poverty Summit. The Poverty Summit aims to stimulate academic thought and raise awareness about poverty; engage students in meaningful thought about the issues surrounding poverty; and encourage action. The 2009 Poverty Summit will be held November 6-8 at Baylor University. We invite interested parties to submit proposals for workshops. All proposals should engage students, faculty, and/or staff around one of the following four themes:
- Community-Building and Development
- Engaging Students in Higher Education to Address Poverty
- International Poverty Alleviation
- Hunger, Poverty, and Economics
Workshops will take place on Saturday, November 7. In addition, we encourage students, faculty/staff, and community partners to showcase projects or initiatives that address issues of poverty during an exhibition time on Friday, November 6. September 30 – Deposits due for Waco Habitat trip to Valle Nuevo, El Salvador. Dates of trip will be January 2-10, 2010. Join us on our Global Village trip to El Salvador and experience another culture while making a difference in the lives of others.
As a Global Village volunteer, you will work alongside members of the host community in building decent, affordable housing. Your active partnership will help raise awareness of the burden of poverty housing and create a true global village of love, community, homes and hope.
No experience necessary. We welcome all who want to make a difference by picking up a hammer and helping to change lives. There is no maximum age limit. This trip may require strenuous manual labor, so all participants should be in good health. Most of our responsibilities will include carrying bricks, mixing cement, moving and compacting dirt, etc. Itineraries are balanced with plenty of work, rest and free time. We will spend a few days discovering the area and participating in local cultural activities. You can expect to gain a unique set of experiences and memories. Volunteers form once-in-a-lifetime friendships as they travel, live, work and eat together.
