Through August 20 – Summer food service program  — Waco I.S.D. is once again be sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) this summer. This program serves FREE breakfast and lunch to any child age 1 – 18. Please note the dates and times of service at each location by checking this website: Summer Food Service Program. Meals will not be served before or after the scheduled serving times. Through August 20 – “Have Lunch on Us.” – The McLennan County Hunger Coalition, through a grant from Grande Communications, is again sponsoring a program in connection with WISD’s Summer Nutrition Program called “Have Lunch On Us”. Through August 20, the MCHC will provide free lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays to parents accompanying their children to the follow participating summer feeding sites: Provident Heights Elementary, 11 am.-1 p .m., Bell’s Hill Elementary, 11 a.m.- 1p.m., Wesley United Methodist Church, 125 Turner St., and through Restoration Haven at Estella Maxey Apartment Complex, 12-12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Now until August 20 – Junior League of Waco Accepting Proposals for 75th Anniversary Project. – The Junior League of Waco, Inc. will be celebrating its 75th year anniversary of serving the women and children of our community. One of the ways that our members would like to celebrate is by giving back even more to the community through a service project. We are in the process of soliciting ideas for this service project and welcome you to apply. We will be reviewing proposals from now until August 20th. Through September 14 – Volunteers needed to help with Care Net Celebrate Life Banquet with guest speaker Sarah Palin.  – We need an ARMY of volunteers to help coordinate the evening. This is a great way to have your church or small group participate and sit together, as a special roped off area will be saved just for you! Banquet posters have arrived and we are ready to paper the city, coffee shops, businesses and churches. August 4 - The Gospel Cafe re-opens after CrossTies July sabbatical. Meals are served from 11:30 to 1:30 Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Friday at 825 South 10th St., in the Kate Ross Neighborhood. Persons interested in volunteering should contact Sherry Castello at Sherry@Castello.com  or 405-0832.

August 7 – Greater Bohemian Open Golf Tournament benefitting Caritas of Waco. Time: 8 a.m. Place: Battle Lake Golf Course. Cost: $60 per person, $240 per team. Caritas of Waco, with Tammee and Dewayne of Big 95- KBGO Radio, is excited to announce the 13th Annual Greater Bohemian Golf Tournament (GBO). The GBO is probably the most unique golf tournament in Central Texas— and perhaps anywhere. The folks at Caritas guarantee that it will be the most enjoyable event you’ll play this year. This four-person scramble will challenge players’ golfing skills—such as driving from a toilet and putting with a pool cue. Tournament winners will, as usual, receive the “coveted” plaid jackets (gleaned from the Caritas Resale Stores), as well as other wonderful golf-related prizes. Prizes will be awarded for holes-in-one, closest to the pin, and the longest drive. Breakfast and lunch are included. Proceeds from the GBO will go to support Caritas. August 10 – The Central Texas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grant Writing Workshop. Time: 8:45 – Noon. Place: Lakewood Christian Church, 6509 Bosque Blvd. – Waco, (Corner of Bosque Blvd.& Cobbs Dr.). Grant applications to support efforts to reduce breast cancer will be considered in Bell, Bosque, Coryell, Falls, McLennan, and Milam Counties. Based on a community needs assessment, Komen has identified the three following funding priority areas: Education and informational programs in breast health, Screening (mammograms and follow-up services.), Treatment. August 12 - McLennan County Hunger Coalition (MCHC) meeting – 11:45-1:00, Caritas of Waco Conference Room, 300 S. 15th. A coalition of representatives of food pantries, feeding programs, governmental agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, and interested individuals committed to solving the problems of food insecurity and hunger in the local area, the MCHC meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday of each month. August 13 & 14 – Texas Mission of Mercy sponsored by Community Dental Task Force.  Place: MCC Campus, HPE building. August 17 thru September 21 (Tuesdays at 7:00) – “Bring it to the Table” Marriage enrichment forum for couples in the Greater Waco area. “Bring It To The Table,” is designed to explore the complex issues and emotions surrounding marriage and explain in a very down-to-earth manner the orgin of many marital problems and the solutions to counter them. Six sessions, come to one, some or all. “Bring It To The Table,” is a 6-week forum that will take place on Tuesday Nights, (Aug. 17th, 24th, 31st, and Sept. 7th, 14th, 21st from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Doris Miller Family YMCA located at 1020 Elm Avenue. August 24 – Heart of Texas Crop Walk for Hunger Steering Committee meeting. Time: 5:30 pm. Place: Seeds of Hope office at 7th & James Baptist Church, 602 James (call 755-7745 or email seedseditor@clearwire.net  for directions) Join us to help plan the 2010 Waco CROP walk. Three-fourths of the proceeds from the CROP walk will go to Church World Service (CWS) a world-wide relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry. August 26 & 27- Volunteer Training for Care Net Waco. Time: 9-3, must attend both days. Place: Care Net Administrative Offices, 4700 W. Waco Drive. Care Net is searching for volunteers who have a heart to minister to men and women facing an unplanned pregnancy. They have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities including facilitating classes, event planning, peer counseling, office support and many others. Some volunteer positions require 12-hour Care Net training and a period of in-house training. August 27 – TANO: The Basics of Grants and Sustainability Workshop in Austin. Want to learn how to write a successful proposal and sustain your program? This workshop will provide participants the information needed to get started! From learning the difference between government and private grants to discussing the details of proposal components areas and how to sustain your program, participants will discover how much information is needed to create a winning proposal and what the best practices are to sustain a program beyond grant funds. August 28 – Missions Fair: “Connecting Hands and Hearts. Time: 1-3 p.m. Place: Family of Faith Church of the Nazarene, 3336 Garden Drive, Waco. The goal of the event is to increase volunteerism by showing Waco residents what organizations are working here and what their needs are, as well as to connect people that may need their services to these vital groups.
