Family Abuse Center Volunteer Orientation – Will be held EVERY Monday 2-3pm; Tuesday 9-10am; Thursday 5:30-6:30; and EVERY Second Saturday of the month. Exceptions include Monday January 25th, 2010. Fill out an online application by going to www.familyabusecenter.org and clicking on the “How Can I Help?” tab then sign up to come to our one hour orientation to become a volunteer. Potential volunteers must call 254.772.8999 X2232 to sign up for an orientation date or send an email to Raquel.Salinas@familyabusecenter.org.  Come be a part of helping survivors of domestic violence!

Now through February 7 – Apply for Summer 2010 White House Internship Program. The Summer 2010 White House internship program application is now available at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/internships . White House internships are full time, unpaid positions and participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation and housing. In addition to office duties, interns will supplement their learning experience by attending a weekly lecture series hosted by senior staff, assist at White House events and volunteer in community service projects. Now thru March 12 – Applications due for Bread For the World Hunger Justice Leader training. Two years ago, 75 young leaders came to the nation’s capital for intensive training in advocacy for hungry and poor people. Since then, they have served as powerful agents of change in their communities. Now Bread for the World is looking for the best and brightest 20- to 30-year-old advocates to join our next class of Hunger Justice Leaders. Do you have what it takes to be Hunger Justice Leader? Or do you know someone who does? Selected participants will attend an advocacy training workshop—all expenses paid—in Washington, D.C., June 12-15, 2010. February 4 – Caritas “Food From the Faithful” Congregation Appreciation and Awareness Breakfast. Time: 8 to 9 a.m. Place: Caritas of Waco, 300 S. 15th, Waco. Please invite members of your congregation who have been involved with Caritas, or who are interested in getting involved with Caritas, to join us for a breakfast of coffee, juice and pastries and a tour of Caritas. February 8 thru 13 – World Cup Café & Fair Trade Market Anniversary Celebration. We’re four years old! The World Cup Café has been serving some great breakfast and lunch meals since Valentine’s Day, 2006. We added the “Fair Trade” items in the café two years later. February 9 – Mission Waco Banquet. Place: Ferrell Center. “Looking for the city that is yet to come” (Hebrews 13:14) is the theme of this year’s banquet that is the most important one yet! In one evening, you will be overwhelmed with encouragement when you hear from various community leaders about the good things that are emerging in our community for the poor. Besides Mission Waco’s role, you will hear briefly from the Mayor, Chambers of Commerce, all three colleges, churches, businesses and ministries how Waco is diligently partnering for the poor and marginalized of the community. Underwriters and table-sponsorships and silent auction gifts are currently being sought. Mission Waco hopes to raise funds and bring about more commitment to address the incredible 27% poverty rate in Waco. February 11 – McLennan County Hunger Coalition (MCHC) meeting – 11:45-1:00, Caritas of Waco Conference Room, 300 S. 15th. A coalition of representatives of food pantries, feeding programs, governmental agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, and interested individuals committed to solving the problems of food insecurity and hunger in the local area, the MCHC meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday of each month. February 11 – Baylor University School of Education Distinguished Lecture: The Evolution of Human Leadership. Time: 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. Place: Region 12 Education Service Center, 2101 West Loop 340, in the community auditorium. The Baylor School of Education Lecture Series seeks to engage the school, university and community in discussing important, relevant and challenging educational topics. February 16 – One Book, One Waco Book Discussion: The Summer Kitchen. Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m,Place: Central Library, 1717 Austin Ave. One Book One Waco invites you to participate in a community book discussion on The Summer Kitchen, this Spring’s book selection inspired by Waco’s Gospel Café.  February 16 – Free Legal Support Forum for Central Texas Senior Citizens. Time: 9am – Noon. Place: Waco Area Agency on Aging facility located at 1514 S. New Road, Waco (near the VA Hospital.) Topics such as navigating the Medicare system, Medical and Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Directives, Guardianships, Wills and the Probate process, will be covered. All information will be presented in an easily accessible group format designed to help both seniors and their caregivers through the sometimes overwhelming decision-making process involved in long term-care planning. February 20 – Baylor Law School, The People’s Law School. Time: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost: Free. The People’s Law School is your opportunity to learn some fundamentals that may help you in your day-to-day personal and business life or satisfy your curiosity about the law and how it works. February 21 - Classical Piano Recital to Benefit Legal Assistance Project. Time: 2:00. Place: St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 800 N. New Road, Waco. The recital will feature a classical piano performance by Dr. Robin Wallace, Professor of Musicology at Baylor University and noted scholarly authority on Beethoven. Professor Wallace will be performing selections from Schubert, Chopin, and Debussy for this event. There is no charge for admission; however, audience members will be asked to contribute free-will tax-deductible donations to support the Project. There will be a hosted reception to follow the performance. The Legal Assistance Project does not provide attorney representation, but rather provides one-on-one educational counseling with technical support and free public legal educational forums to low-moderate income persons throughout the Central Texas region. February 24 – Inspiring one-hour presentation about the work of the “Truth be Told” organization. Time: 5:00 – 6:00. Place: The offices of Patillo, Brown & Hill, LLP – 401 W. Hwy 6, Waco. “Truth be Told” which has been working in the State Prison at Lockhart since 2000, is expanding its programs to include the prison at Gatesville. Come hear about these exciting programs that provide transformational tools for women behind bars and beyond. February 23 – Heart of Texas Crop Walk for Hunger Steering Committee meeting. Time: 5:30 pm. Three-fourths of the proceeds from the CROP walk will go to Church World Service (CWS) a world-wide relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry. February 25 – Informational Meeting about the Grandparents as Parents Program (GAPP) presented by The Methodist Children’s Home in collaboration with Family of Faith Worship Center. February 27 – Single Parent Support Workshop. Time: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Place: First Baptist Church of Waco – Activities Center, 5th and Webster. Parents are invited to come and get information about different resources available to them for help and support as well as apply for government assistance programs. Government agencies as well as local non-profits will be represented. Free childcare will be available for children 3-12 years old.
