May 1 – Heart of Texas Autism Network 3rd annual Walk for Autism. Time: Registration at 8:00 am, Walk starts at 9:00 am. Place: Baylor University Campus, Fountain Mall, fifth street. Cost: Adults $20, kids $10. T-shirts for those who pre-register by April 16. (No T-shirts for race day registration). All proceeds benefit LOCAL programs & organizations that help people our community who are affected by autism — like the Autism Resource Center the Arc of McLennan County’s Summer Day Camp for children with disabilities (including autism), etc. Less than 15 years ago, 1 person in 10,000 had autism. Today, the Centers for Disease Control say it’s 1 in 110, and the numbers just keep rising. These children are joining our society as adults; many of them will need significant support for employment, housing, transportation, etc. Research shows that appropriate, research-based interventions, especially early in life, can reduce the lifetime cost for supporting an individual with autism by 2/3. May 2 – Gospel Live benefit for Talitha Koum Institute. Time: 2-4. Place: Phoenix Ballroom,401 S. 3rd. St. Waco. Proceeds from Gospel Live will be used to benefit Talitha Koum Nurture Center, a mental health therapeutic nursery for infants and children in South Waco. More details coming soon! May 2 – The Greater Waco Interfaith Conference Third Annual Festival of Faiths. Time: 6 pm. Place: Sacred Heart Catholic Church Activities Center, 2710 Speight Avenue, Waco. This unique religious event will again showcase many of the various religious faith traditions that are practiced by people living in the greater Waco community. Through music, readings, dramatic presentations, dance, and other visual presentations, members of congregations, temples, and synagogues will present important aspects of their particular faiths. There will be the opportunity to sample traditional foods from many of the cultures represented within these religious traditions existing within our community. Attendees of the Festival of Faiths will have the opportunity to experience a brief time for religious dialogue among these various faiths. May 13 - McLennan County Hunger Coalition (MCHC) meeting – 11:45-1:00, Caritas of Waco Conference Room, 300 S. 15th. A coalition of representatives of food pantries, feeding programs, governmental agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, and interested individuals committed to solving the problems of food insecurity and hunger in the local area, the MCHC meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday of each month. May 15 – “Dancin’ on the Brazos” in support of Caritas. Time: 7pm – 9pm. Place: Waco Convention Center, 100 Washington Ave, Waco. Cost: $5 for adults, free admission for children accompanied by adults.  Donation of non-perishable food items and/or cash requested. Caritas of Waco together with Big 95-KBGO Radio and KXXV-TV hosts the 5th annual “Dancin’ on the Brazos” event. Proceeds will aid the emergency assistance services of Caritas of Waco, which serves hundreds of local individuals each month This year “Dancin” will again feature the sounds and energy of “Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88’s” in live concert and dance. May 20 – Heart of Texas Crop Walk for Hunger Steering Committee meeting. Time: 5:30 pm. Place: Seeds of Hope office at 7th & James Baptist Church, 602 James (call 755-7745 or email seedseditor@clearwire.net  for directions) Join us to help plan the 2010 Waco CROP walk. Three-fourths of the proceeds from the CROP walk will go to Church World Service (CWS) a world-wide relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry. May 21 – Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition Meeting. Time: Lunch at 11:45 AM, meeting starts at Noon. Place: TBA. Cost: No cost to attend. May 23 – Global Day of Prayer. Time: 6:50– 8:00 am. Place: World Cup Café, 1321 N. 15th–the corner of 15th & Colcord Avenue in Waco.  -  Last year, millions of Christians from all over the world gathered on Pentecost Sunday to pray and seek God’s will. Started in South Africa in 2000, the prayer movement spread throughout the world to include almost every nation. Mission Waco annually hosts this day of prayer and global unity with an early morning gathering where local Christians gather to pray. Meeting this year on Sunday, May 23, scores of Waco churches are expected to participate. With good weather, those praying will meet at Jubilee Park (across the street) for one hour of prayer. May 25 – Free Legal Support Forum for Central Texas Senior Citizens. Time: 9am – Noon. Place: Waco Area Agency on Aging facility located at 1514 S. New Road, Waco (near the VA Hospital.) Topics such as navigating the Medicare system, Medical and Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Directives, Guardianships, Wills and the Probate process, will be covered. All information will be presented in an easily accessible group format designed to help both seniors and their caregivers through the sometimes overwhelming decision-making process involved in long term-care planning.
