September 2 – Urban Gardening Coalition: Local Farmer Food Festival.  Time: 5pm-7pm. Place:3500 Franklin Ave.Over 150 Organically grown, Healthy Foods from our very own Local Farmers will be brought to Waco for our Food Festival, Labor Day weekend Extravaganza. Come join us and be able to buy healthy and fresh foods for yourself and your family. We have over dozen local farmers and vendors at our Festival. Perishable items MUST be preordered through our Food Network. Email me to join the network (no membership fee necessary). If you are a farmer and would like to join our group of over 500 citizen members and sell to them, email me. We are in need of Fall veggies and fruits, pecans and a pork/hog vendor, also Turkey. September 4 – Little Kickers Fall 2010 Skills Camp, benefitting AVANCE. Time: 8:30 – 12:30. Place: University High School Soccer Fields, 2600 Bagby. This is a preseason soccer clinic for children 1st to 6th graders. WISD coaches volunteer their time to teach children not only soccer skills, but team building and leadership skills. I have attached the flyer and I would really like for you to pass it around. The cost is $20.00 for each child and it includes insurance. September 9 – McLennan County Hunger Coalition (MCHC) meeting – 11:45-1:00, Caritas of Waco Conference Room, 300 S. 15th. A coalition of representatives of food pantries, feeding programs, governmental agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, and interested individuals committed to solving the problems of food insecurity and hunger in the local area, the MCHC meets monthly, usually on the second Thursday of each month. September 12 – BBQ Dinner and Take-out to Benefit Programs of Lutheran Ministries and Social Services of Waco. Time: 10:30 am – 2:00 pm. Place: Christ Lutheran Church, 3101 MacArthur Drive in Waco. B-B-Q dinner, with optional take-out, to benefit the programs of Lutheran Ministries and Social Services of Waco, the local Waco non-profit best known for its Legal Assistance Project. Plates are priced as follows: 3-meat $10, 2-meat $9, and 1-meat $8. Each plate will come with two sides and a roll, with your choice of brisket, chicken, and/or sausage. Advance orders will be taken. September 13 – Bidder’s conference: Request for Proposals for Community Youth Development Services in 76707 – Communities In Schools of the Heart of Texas is requesting proposals to provide Community Youth Development (CYD) services to children and youth in the 76707 zip code area. The goal of the CYD program is to implement educational, employment, recreational, health, and supportive services that promote the social and economic well being of youth and their families. In order to minimize the prevalence of Juvenile Crime and the destruction of our youth and community, we will offer services which will impact our youth’s school attendance and performance, build their self-esteem, and enhance their decision-making skills. We will provide meaningful activities, which will enable them to avoid gang, crime, violent or delinquent activities. A Bidders’ Conference will take place at the Dewey recreation Center on September 13, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until noon. September 15th – Community-wide Food Pantry Meeting. Time: Noon – 1pm. Place: Caritas of Waco, 300 South 15th St, Waco. Caritas of Waco invites all local food pantry operators to join them in an open discussion, focusing on food needs within McLennan County. The aim of this even is to open the lines of communication between individual pantries, in hopes to better serve the community. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP. September 17 – TANO: The Basics of Grants and Sustainability Workshop in Austin. Want to learn how to write a successful proposal and sustain your program? This workshop will provide participants the information needed to get started! September 21 – Free Legal Support Forum for Central Texas Senior Citizens. Time: 9am – Noon. Place: Waco Area Agency on Aging facility located at 1514 S. New Road, Waco (near the VA Hospital.) Topics such as navigating the Medicare system, Medical and Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Directives, Guardianships, Wills and the Probate process, will be covered. All information will be presented in an easily accessible group format designed to help both seniors and their caregivers through the sometimes overwhelming decision-making process involved in long term-care planning. September 25 – Sharefest Waco Community Workday. Save the Date!  More details coming soon! Sharefest is an annual inter-church day of service in the community. Last year over 400 volunteers from 6 churches worked together throughout Waco and the surrounding communities to perform services such as landscaping and yard work for elderly citizens, cleaning up vacant lots, painting schools and other public buildings,and much more. Volunteers logged over 1500 man hours of work at 22 work sites. We would love for your church to be a part! September 25 – “Down on the Bayou” Cajun Food and Fun Festival benefiting Youth ConnectionTime: 7-11 pm. Place: The Palladium in Downtown Waco. Activities will include a Cajun food festival, dancing to the distinctive sounds of “Crawfish,” a lively Cajun band, open bar with beer and wine and opportunity to bid on auction items. September 28 – Heart of Texas Crop Walk for Hunger Steering Committee meeting. Time: 5:30 pm. Three-fourths of the proceeds from the CROP walk will go to Church World Service (CWS) a world-wide relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry. September 30 – Welcome to Medicare. Time: 9:30 – 12. Place: Heart of Texas Council of government (Training Room), 1514 New Road. The Heart of Texas Council of Governments and Area Agency on Aging will join the Waco Social Security Administration Office, Care Improvement Plus and Texas Home Health in presenting, “Welcome to Medicare,” a free class for area seniors and their caregivers to learn about basic Medicare information, including the various Medicare coverage options and benefits provided under the federal program. Experts will provide guidance on many topics, including assistance programs to help with the cost of prescriptions and health care services, Social Security, and local caregiving resources.
