- December 4 – Christmas Music Concert with Robert McFarland benefitting the Gospel Café – 7:30, Lake Shore Baptist Church, 5801 Bishop, Waco. Robert McFarland, the internationally honored baritone and frequent performer with the New York City Opera, will sing selections of sacred and Christmas music. He will be accompanied on piano by Janya Martin, associate professor of German at Baylor. Ms. Martin will also lead a string quartet that will feature Robert McFarland’s daughter, violinist Heather McFarland, director of string studies at the Academie Musique at Temple Junior College. A dessert reception will follow the concert. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger. All proceeds benefit the Gospel Cafe. - December 6 – Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC) Graduation – It’s graduation time again! We’ll graduate 11 women from our Career Track this semester. - December 6 – Thrive! Youth Event: Romance without Regret featuring Jason Evert. - Thrive! is a ministry to help equip those who care for youth and to inspire youth to follow paths that lead to sexual health for their minds and bodies. It’s a great way to introduce youth to the biblical teachings and Church’s understanding of love, dating, and marriage. Pastors, Sunday School teachers, and parents can follow-up after the evening with their youth with questions about what they thought. The next youth event is on Thursday, December 6 from 6:30-8:30pm at St. Louis Catholic Church featuring national speaker Jason Evert (Chastity.com) and the band Soundwave from Austin, Texas. The talk will be based on the Theology of the Body teachings of John Paul II and be ecumenical for all Christians. The target audience is grades 6-12, and all adults are welcome. - December 8 – Community Musical honoring H.O.P.E. Center- Road to Damascus will be hosting a community musical called “Love and Unity” on December 8, 2012, Friday starting at 5pm at Carver Park Baptist Church, 1020 Herring Ave. Theme : God has a purpose and a plan. Roman 8:28 ; John 13-34-35; Psalm 133:1. Event is FREE. Carver Park Baptist Church choir…..Special guests Dejuan & Tanuya Adamson and Marvelous Joy Production presents Triple A, and may , many more. - December 8 – Equality Project Training – The Equality Project aims to engage the public in maintaining continuous conversations with their elected officials about public policy matters that directly impact their lives. It is these conversations about real people’s lives that will ultimately motivate policy changes to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression. In this training you will learn how easy it is to have a one-on-one conversation with your elected officials and their staff. - December 8 – Gifts for Grannies at the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame – Many elderly and people with disabilities have no one to remember them on birthdays and holidays. Friends for Life tries to remember them all throughout the year. You can help us reach out to them this holiday season. The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, 100 Texas Ranger Trail, will have a Big Texas Christmas Present event benefiting the Gifts for Grannies program from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Individuals who donate a gift for the program will receive free admission to the museum. The event also will include a car show sponsored by the Mi Familia Car Club. - December 10 – VolunTEEN Fair – The city of Waco Youth Council will have a VolunTEEN Fair from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cameron Park Clubhouse, 2601 Sturgis Road. The event is geared to connect teens looking for volunteer opportunities with area social service agencies that can use teenage volunteers. To register, call Earl Stinnett at 750-8018.
- December 11 – Open Forum on Racism: Posing the Question, “Who are we?” – Empowerment Driven by Knowledge Coalition founder, Sophia A Strother will be hosting a series of open forums on racism for her documentary “MY NAKED TRUTH – WHO AM I?”. She’s responsible for hosting ‘A Time for Change’ series (East Waco & Marlin) in 2009 working with Martin Luther King III, LaDainian Tomlinson and Coach Carter. Sophia has also worked with KWBT 104.9/106.9 to bring Juneteenth Family Fun Day in Park to Waco with 2012 boosting over 6,000 participants. Now she’s embarking on another mission of unveiling our history on her terms. These forums are going to be set up to discuss racism on a personal level with the community and come up with ideas for the US Census and other companies so they can stop the use of “WHITE, BLACK & NEGRO” when describing people. - December 12 – The Greater Waco No-Kill Summit – Learn how the Greater Waco area can apply its resources to mirror the actions of other successful communities to make it safer for animals and more inviting for humans. This positive event is being held at a pivotal time with much community interest. Rick DuCharme, of Jacksonville Florida brings leadership and best practices proven in Jacksonville, FL. - December 14 – Art Center Holiday Fundraiser – Art Center Waco, 1300 College Drive, will have its annual Cool Yule fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. Participants can create their own holiday ornaments and bid on one-of-a-kind, artist-created Christmas ornaments. The event also will include food, drinks and live music. - December 16 – Alzheimer’s info Sessions – The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation will present a free Alzheimer’s information session twice on Dec. 16 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Waco, 4209 N. 27th St. The sessions will be at 9:45 a.m. and 12:05 p.m. The program will cover lifestyle changes and current research that integrates a holistic approach to delay the onset of and possibly reverse Alzheimer’s disease. - December 20 – “Advent and Accolades” Reception & Caroling. Please join Mission Waco for a few minutes or an hour at the new “Fair Trade Mkt” room behind the World Cup Café, 1321 N. 15th St. We’ll have finger food and goodies and visit between 4:30-5:30, then head next door to the Jubilee Theatre to sing Christmas carols. Prelude Gloria director, Katie James, has assembled several stringed instrument players to accompany our brief time of singing after the reading of the Christmas story. Our own Carlton Willis and Janet Dorrell will sing and lead. If you can only drop in, that is fine. We just want to see you before the Christmas break.
